Twitter is abuzz with tweets from not only from Apicella but also MLG CEO Sundance DiGiovanni who spoke on the record-breaking statistics for the championship. He also commented that sales for ad space during the event are on track to “shatter previous records”.

The tournament will start tonight and run through the weekend, featuring players matching off in popular competitive games such as Starcraft 2, League of Legends, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

MLG is also hosting an All-Star Showdown featuring some of the biggest names in professional sports such as Dwight Howard  (LA Lakers), Dez Bryant (Dallas Cowboys), Ty Lawson (Denver Nuggets), and DeJuan Blair (San Antonio Spurs). These pro athletes will team up with the pro gamers tomorrow at 7:30 pm, and in all likely hood, get absolutely annihilated.

Personally I think it is a little gimmicky, (after all you wouldn’t ask a professional gamer to fight in an MMA Championship), but it’s great to see these big names involved with tournament and bringing in much deserved attention to e-sports.

The MLG Anaheim Spring Championship will be streamed all weekend through MLG’s website.
